Her eyes were a deep brown, and I think of her as unblinking, as if she were always looking at something suspended between horror and sadness. My mother was fair-skinned with a delicate, bony strand of a nose and dark, straight hair. I taunted my mother with the word as if anorexia were something she might desire, not something she already had. I added it to the lyrics of popular songs and sang them while my mother slowly pushed her food around a plate, rarely lifting the fork to her mouth, every morsel a lame horse on a track, never reaching the finish line. At the dinner table I inserted it into the conversation. The word “anorexia” was like a prize I had won in a draw someone entered on my behalf unexpected, sure, but I would find a use for it. What it described was what we had just seen: a skeleton in Nikes. The driver of the car, my friend’s mother, said the word that we did not know. From the burgundy insides of a Chevy Blazer, we all turned to look at a jogger, a woman, a sinewy form devoid of curves, angles only, rib cage and clavicles protruding, like some sort of moving body diagram, inside out. ![]() I first heard the term “anorexic” in the back seat of a car on the way home from the movies. ![]()

These events would be something like falling from a bridge, becoming a monkey, or becoming 90 years older. In the earliest strips, the dream would end because of a disaster that could hurt or kill Nemo. Or they comforted him because he was sad. Then the grownups were angry with him, because he had waken them up. ![]() The last picture in each strip always was Nemo waking up, in or near his bed. The King wanted Nemo as a friend for his daughter, the Princess. In the first strips he tried to go to Slumberland. The comic was about the dreams of a little boy named Nemo. Little Nemo in Slumberland came back for a short time from 1924-1927. The strip was first called Little Nemo in Slumberland and then In the Land of Wonderful Dreams. These comic strips appeared in the New York Herald and New York American newspapers from Octo– Jand Septem– July 26, 1914. When she asks him to bark out in public he instead says “Hello”. George’s now relieved mother takes George out on the town to show him off. After all of the animals have been removed George is able to bark. The vet reaches down in George’s throat and pulls out a cat, duck, pig, and even a cow. The vet discovers that the reason why George is having so much trouble barking is because he actually has the other animals inside of him. George’s now frustrated mother takes him to the vet to see why George is having so much trouble with barking. She asks him to bark again and he quacks like a duck, again and he oinks like a pig, and finally he moos like a cow. ![]() George’s mother explains to him that cat’s meow, dogs on the other hand bark. ![]() “Bark, George” by Jules Feiffer is a children’s book about a dog named George who can not bark.Īt the beginning of the book George’s mother asks him to bark. ![]() |
