Do you remember the first time you read Harry Potter and you thought OMG, this how I feel about this book □ That it, just wanted to put it out there and now I can calmly go back to the review □Īkarnae is like a great mix of Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia, all written in such a delightful way. I was going to read the series and then post, but this first book was so very much the sort of thing I was thinking of when I originally posted that I decided to talk about it on its own. A kind reader of this blog put me onto the author with a comment on my Fictional Characters with Parkinson’s post. ![]() This is the first of a number of books featuring the character of O’Loughlin. ![]() I certainly wouldn’t have known, two years ago. O’Loughlin tells another character in the very first chapter that “I have a disease too”, but – despite an accurate set of symptoms being alluded to in the intervening chapters – I doubt that the average reader would know what was wrong with him until the moment they encounter the words on the page. It allows the reader to get to know the main character – Professor Joseph O’Loughlin, working as a clinical psychologist in London – and to get stuck into the story before introducing the tricky condition. It’s as plain as the nose on your face, even if he doesn’t mention PD until chapter flippin’ 7!Īctually, leaving the name of the disease until chapter 7 is an act of genius. The story takes places (mostly) in a boarding school and it is told from the point of view of one character. There is LBGTQ representation and lots of boarding school drama and murder to keep things interesting. The characters are compelling and complex. Going in I figured out the culprit but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment one bit, I really had a good time with this book. Because at Bates Academy, the truth is something you make…not something that happened.❞Įver since I read One of Us is Lying, I’ve been looking for another YA suspenseful read and this one fit the bill. My mother was fair-skinned with a delicate, bony strand of a nose and dark, straight hair. I taunted my mother with the word as if anorexia were something she might desire, not something she already had. I added it to the lyrics of popular songs and sang them while my mother slowly pushed her food around a plate, rarely lifting the fork to her mouth, every morsel a lame horse on a track, never reaching the finish line. At the dinner table I inserted it into the conversation. The word “anorexia” was like a prize I had won in a draw someone entered on my behalf unexpected, sure, but I would find a use for it. What it described was what we had just seen: a skeleton in Nikes. The driver of the car, my friend’s mother, said the word that we did not know. From the burgundy insides of a Chevy Blazer, we all turned to look at a jogger, a woman, a sinewy form devoid of curves, angles only, rib cage and clavicles protruding, like some sort of moving body diagram, inside out. ![]() I first heard the term “anorexic” in the back seat of a car on the way home from the movies. ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments Nemo in slumberland comic![]() ![]() Pill, The Imp, the Candy Kid, and Santa Claus.
